We thank you Lord, for this term. For the challenges, the successes, and the mistakes from which we have learnt. Be with us as we spend our time with family and friends. Give us strength and courage to do what is right; to be witnesses of our faith. Help us to be a practical Christian these holidays, to appreciate what others do for us, to give time and effort to help others, to be peacemakers in our family. Keep us safe in our activities; give us good rest and good fun. Bring us back refreshed and ready for a new term. May we always be conscious of you in our lives.
Amen.
Many of us may be missing out on our winter escape overseas but one thing for which we can all be very grateful, is that we have the most scenic island state to call home and holiday in. So get out and enjoy it! Stay safe.
WHERE ARE WE AT WITH COVID-19?

SACC EXTENSION - YEARS 11 & 12
As you are aware, from the College and Parish community email distributed last Wednesday, a public announcement was made at Parliament House last week confirming that, following the detailed investigation and pre-preparation process, Catholic Education in the southern region will be extending three colleges, St Aloysius Catholic College, MacKillop College and St Virgils College to Years 11 and 12, .
The final confirmation from His Grace Archbishop Porteous that the planned extension will officially proceed, gives us the opportunity to begin consulting with the extended SACC community. We look forward to working with many of you as part of this process.

EXPLORERS
Explorers are back! We are very excited to announce that the College's Explorers program will recommence in Term 3. We look forward to welcoming our Explorers and their families back to the College.
LOST PROPERTY
We have recently been advised that students named uniform items have been misplaced. Staff do their best to return the named clothing to students. Can you please check that your uniform items are named and that the items belong to you?
A reminder that each campus office does have a collection of unnamed lost property items that both students and parents/guardians can come and check for any lost belongings.
NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on any students and students will not be involved in any testing process. The college will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government's Privacy Policy
Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD website
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the College.
PLASTIC FREE JULY
This month is Plastic Free July. This is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution so we can have cleaner streets, oceans and beautiful communities.
We have a number of students keen to take up the challenge. It would be fantastic if families could get involved too. It doesn’t mean you have to go completely plastic free; you could just aim to cut out one thing; ditch disposable coffee cups and bring your own reusable cup, find plastic-free alternatives when buying fruit and veggies or bring your own reusable shopping bags and help reduce plastic waste.
If you are interested please contact Mrs Michelle Dance michelle.dance@catholic.tas.edu.au or you can sign up to the challenge below and you’ll be emailed tips and recipes throughout July.
If you don’t know where to start, attached is a list of ideas.

PREP
In celebration of the end of Term 2, Prep held a Pyjama day and movie afternoon.
The movie day was held on Wednesday, 1st July, where children were invited to come dressed in their comfiest pyjamas, robes and slippers. We asked that students bring in a $5.00 donation in support of the Vinnies Winter Appeal, which will be the Prep's contribution to the upcoming College fundraiser, 'Imagine a Family'.
We viewed the movie Inside Out as this connects to the explorations and discussions we have been looking at as part of our Health and HASS units over the course of Terms 1 and 2. This links to zones of regulation, growing and changing, developing a positive self identity and learning to regulate our emotions.
This was such a fun way to celebrate the end of an extraordinary term and everyone had an amazing time.
GRADE 8 VISUAL ARTS
Students have been exploring lino carving techniques and created their own lino prints. They studied artists like Rachel Newling and Barbara Hanrahan. Students created detailed carvings and printed black and white prints as well as hand coloured their work. They also completed observational and compositional drawings of still life objects.
REAL MAN
Tomasz Juszcrak is the Director of Youth Evangelisation with the Archdiocese of Hobart. He recently came to speak to Grade 8 male students on the topic of 'real manhood.'
Tomasz spoke to students very powerfully and honestly about the challenges he had faced and overcome on his path to becoming a man. He also spoke about real happiness, what we can learn from Jesus, respecting women and the importance of friendship. Tomasz built much of his talk around characters from the movie ‘The Avengers.’ He especially focused on the personal growth undertaken by the character known as Iron Man/Tony Stark.
It was a great opportunity for the students listening to think and reflect on the type of man they want to be. A big thank you to Tomasz for visiting us.
SCIENCE
Grade 9 students have been spending the term studying plate tectonics, volcanoes and earthquakes. As a STEM challenge, the students were required to build an earthquake resistant building from spaghetti.
Extended Science students have been busy looking at equations of motion this term. This has involved students conducting experiments measuring their speed and acceleration. This culminated in students trying to beat Usain Bolts 100m, 200m, and 400m sprint times.
VET HOSPITALITY STUDENTS
Hospitality students have been practising their hot chocolate making skills by offering steaming hot chocolates to students and staff for a $2.00 donation. Funds raised are going towards The Alex Gadomski Fellowship and the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. You can find out more information about these wonderful charities in the links below.
ENTERTAINMENT BOOK
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, it is unlikely that many of the normal Community Group fundraising events will go ahead this year. With the Entertainment Book as an all online option starting this year, this is a great opportunity to support the College and local Tasmanian businesses by purchasing the app. $14.00 from each sale goes towards the Community Group to help purchase items for the College.
Futher information can be found in the link below.
COMMUNITY GROUP MEETING
The next Community Group Meeting will be held on Tuesday, 4th August in the Sisters of Charity Centre at the Kingston Campus from 7:00pm. We welcome families to come along, meet other parents and help discuss ideas for fundraising options.
2020 NAIDOC WEEK DATES AND POSTER WINNER ANNOUNCED
National NAIDOC Week 2020 celebrations will now be held from 8th-15th November.
The November dates follow the decision by the National NAIDOC Committee (NNC) to postpone NAIDOC Week from the original July dates due to the impacts and uncertainty from the escalating Coronavirus pandemic across our communities and cities.
NAIDOC is an acronym for National Aborigines and Islander Day Observance Committee. This year's theme is 'ALWAYS WAS, ALWAYS WILL BE', recognising that First Nation's people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.

ABC SCREENING OF 'IN MY BLOOD IT RUNS'
This heart-warming observational documentary about history, learning, love and resistance premieres on Sunday, 5th July at 9:30pm on ABC and ABC iview. This day (Sunday 5th July) is known as Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Sunday.
Told through the eyes of charismatic 10-year-old Arrernte/Garrwa boy Dujuan and his family, the film charts the challenges Dujuan faces both in his school and on the streets of Alice Springs. In his community, Dujuan is recognised as a child-healer and a hunter. He speaks three languages, yet despite his depth of wisdom and intelligence, Dujuan is failing in school and facing increasing scrutiny from welfare and the police.
As he travels perilously close to incarceration, his family fight to give him a strong Arrente education alongside his western education. We walk with him as he grapples with these pressures, shares his truths and somewhere in-between finds space to dream, imagine and hope for his future.
The documentary is rated PG with parental guidance recommended for children under 13 years of age. Here is a link to a movie review providing parents with more details

SUCCESSFUL GRANT APPLICATION FROM CCI GIVING
Last term (in the midst of COVID-19!), St Aloysius Catholic College, working together with Kingborough Helping Hands, were successful in an application for a grant from ‘Catholic Church Insurance Giving’. This enabled new bedding to be purchased for Jirah House who help those experiencing domestic violence by providing safe housing, counselling and assistance in planning a violence-free future. CCI Giving assisted the organisation to purchase new bedding and linen, to improve hygiene and comfort for the families that stay there. Special thanks to Les Gardner, Business Manager at St Aloysius Catholic College and Camille Newton of Kingborough Helping Hands for their hard work and Oakley Textiles for their assistance in facilitating this project. A corresponding College wide Kingborough Helping Hands fundraiser had to be postponed due to COVID-19. However, since returning to learning@school we have been able to restart collecting hamper items and are looking into other ways of assisting this special local outreach group.
REFUGEE WEEK PRAYER SPACES
Over the last few weeks Huntingfield students have had the chance in their Religion lessons to visit a number of interactive prayer spaces set up in the Chapel around the theme of refugees.
These were
- Praying in-tents: a tent space to sit and meditate, surrounded by images of refugee camps.
- Stepping stones: a rock meditation space based on a book about refugees illustrated by a Syrian artist.
- Lifeboats: the opportunity to fold a lifeboat and remember those who have made the treacherous journey to safety by sea including those who have lost their lives.
- Welcome mat: writing welcome in different languages.
- Refugee rucksacks: posters showing the contents of various refugee rucksacks and having the opportunity to write a prayer and put it in the rucksack.
