Welcome back
We are well underway for another year at St Aloysius. There is a nice hint of optimism in the air. We have in place some new roles and new structures which are already making a big difference. We have also recruited very well, our new staff have hit the ground running and are doing a great job. The new buildings and furniture look terrific. There have also been a few curveballs, such as COVID, to keep us adaptive. Students and staff have dealt with the various adjustments cheerfully and got on with the teaching and learning program. Overall it has been a very smooth start to the year.
We give a very warm welcome to our new staffing appointments, since my last update early in the new year, and to our new students in 2022:
Staff

2022 College Captains
Hi, my name is Ethan and I am one of the College Captains for 2022. I’ve been at St Aloysius since I started kindergarten back in 2011. My favourite thing about the College is the wide range of extracurricular activities that the school offers. This year I hope to work closely with the student body to make sure that the transition into vertical homerooms is a comfortable one.
Hi, my name is Holly and I am one of the College Captains for 2022. I have been at St Aloysius for 4 years, since Grade 7. My favourite thing about the College is the many electives we can choose from. This year I hope to be able to get to know a lot of the students at the College and to work with them to make the College a better place.

Welcome Charlotte
Hi, my name is Charlotte Bailey and I am the new Administration Trainee at St Aloysius.
I was most intrigued by this role as I was a student here and graduated in 2017. St Aloysius opened so many new paths for me so it felt right to begin my next path right back here. Not only do I get to learn new skills in Admin but I have also been given the opportunity to study my Certificate 3 in Business which is something I have wanted to do since college. My other interests are in psychology and teaching so I felt this role suited me very well as I get to see the inside of the operation to both those fields.
When I am not at work I am either spending time with my friends, most of whom I met here, my family and my cat Nala. I also love reading by the beach. I hope to get to know you all a bit better as I find my way along this new journey.

Opening Hours:
How is the College managing COVID -19?
- When a member of a particular class tests positive for COVID-19, that person (a
confirmed case) is required to isolate at home. When we become aware of the confirmed case we will contact the parents / carers of the other students in the class to inform them of the situation and to request that they monitor their children for symptoms. - Should the number of confirmed cases in a class reach five over a seven-day period, we will notify Public Health of the situation. We will also contact the parents / carers of the other students in the class and request that they test their child using rapid antigen tests (that we will supply) on the day of us making contact with them, then again two days later, followed by a third test three days after the second test. The classmates of the confirmed case can continue to attend school provided they return negative test results and are symptom free.
- Should we have three or more classes over a seven-day period with five or more confirmed cases in them we will notify Public Health. We will also apply the three tests per classmate approach described above in the classes with five or more confirmed cases. In addition to this, we will liaise with Public Health regarding any required additional testing. Additional testing requirements will be communicated to parents / carers and the necessary rapid antigen tests will be supplied. Children who participate in additional testing, and who test negative and are symptom free, can continue to attend school.

Year 3-6 Swimming Carnival
What a wonderful way to start the school year, with the Year 3-6 Swimming Carnival on Friday, 11th February.
This year there was a need to run two mini carnivals, with COVID restrictions not allowing us to have all Year 3-6 students at the pool at the same time. Mrs White did an amazing job organising this, to ensure the day went ahead.
Congratulations to our students who all participated with outstanding sportsmanship and cheered their peers on with encouragement.
Special thank you to Mrs White, Year 10 Student Leaders, and staff helpers on the day.
It was incredibly close between the houses, with only 8 points separating first and third place. Congratulations to Gonzaga for taking out first place this year.

Year 7/10 Swimming Trials
The Year 7-10 swimming trials took place on Wednesday, 16th February at the Hobart Aquatic Centre. The trials were not compulsory for all students, but an invitation to those students who wished to try out for our College representative team, who will compete at the SSATIS carnival on Tuesday, 1st March
We congratulate all students who participated and those students who have been selected to represent the College on Tuesday. Parents of these students have received a letter on Compass with further details.

Kinder classrooms have been given dual names this year. The wenoonyah/Dolphin room and tengwynne/Penguin room now have some beautiful artwork. Paintings by local palawa artist Danny Gardner were presented to students at the beginning of the year.
These will be displayed on the walls and used in room signs and bag tags. The College is grateful not only to Danny but also SETAC (South East Tasmanian Aboriginal Corporation) for permission to use language from the south east of lutruwita/Tasmania in the dual naming of our Kinder rooms.
The traditional ningher canoe constructed by students late last year has been transported to the Middle Campus and is now on exhibit in the foyer. Thank you to the following First Nations' students for helping move the canoe from our Senior Campus and arranging a stunning display:
Hugo, Max, Zack, Cooper, Sean, Jasper, Jack, Archer, Charlize, Alikee, Carmela and Ella.
Parish News
A reminder that the Kingston Channel Parish Website is available to all with the latest Parish Bulletin, news from the parish and links to Fr Mike’s Podcast.
Church Inductions
Over the last few weeks the Prep classes have been introduced to the Church of Christ the Priest at the Junior Campus, having a tour inside and out and learning big words like ‘tabernacle’, sanctuary lamp’ and ‘sacristy’. Fr Mike did a great job showing us around and welcomes everyone to pop their head in and say hello of a morning or afternoon before or after school. The door is always open and he’s often around.
Year 5 MJR
On 10th February, our Year 5 students new to the Middle Campus, received their MJR (Making Jesus Real) journals which they will work through until the end of Year 6. Fr Mike blessed the books and Hannah Donovan and Maggie Sandric, our Parish Associates, talked about their memories of MJR, the messages that stuck with them and how they have their books from primary school!
Making Jesus Real (MJR) has a simple message – Jesus is part of our lives and can change the way we live, and that we can make Jesus real through our daily actions and words. MJR is centred around the belief that we are the image of Jesus to all people around us. We are His representatives, and our actions should reflect His values taught in the Gospel. MJR is a natural follow on from the Spirit of Jesus program run by Jacynth Cornish in Grades 3 and 4. These programs support our College’s wellbeing and pastoral care goals including the values of showing care and compassion, respect, honesty and trustworthiness, understanding, tolerance and inclusion. These values also encourage students to do their best, treat others fairly, be responsible for their actions and follow school rules and procedures.
Mrs Marriott’s favourite quote from the day was “If you want to fly like an eagle, don’t hang around with turkeys!”
Parish Associates
My name is Maggie Sandric and I am one of the Parish Associates for 2022. This is my first year in the role and I am super excited to be a part of the St Aloysius community. Alongside this role, I am also completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Molecular Bioscience at UTAS. I enjoy music and the arts and love to volunteer my time in community outreach programs like Edmund Rice Camps. I look forward to the year ahead and the work that Hannah and I will be able to do in the school community.
My name is Hannah Donovan and I am one of St Aloysius’ Parish Associates for 2022. I have worked in the role for the previous two years and I am excited about another year at the College. Outside of work I am studying a combined Law and Arts degree at the University of Tasmania, majoring in criminology. I’m passionate about outreach and am excited to be involved in what the College offers this year.

This year the route will include a stopover at the Notre Dame Priory.
