ABORIGINAL EDUCATION
Cultural Camp
Grade 6 palawa students recently attended a cultural camp on Bruny Island. The children learnt about the manufacturing of stone tools and the collection of cultural resources. Students also visited Truganinni's memorial at the isthmus.
Accompanied by SACC staff, children spent time with local knowledge holders Uncle Rodney Dillon, his daughter Bronwyn and cultural tutor AJ King. The children learnt about kelp and shell craft, ochre, reading Country and local Aboriginal history. Staying overnight in the Shearers Quarters at Murrayfield station, the palawa students learned a great deal and had a wonderful time.

Black Box
The College recently borrowed the Black Box loan resource from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. A group of palawa students in Grades 2,3 & 4 joined a ningina tunapri live virtual tour presented by one of TMAG's Aboriginal Learning Facilitators to examine the contents. The cultural loan box featured unique artefacts such as stone tools and significant objects made by Tasmanian Aboriginal people, including tirrina (basket), rikawa (bull kelp water carrier), and kanalaritja (shell necklace). Students were fascinated by the cultural objects and learned a great deal about their significance. Over the next week, many palawa children shared their cultural knowledge with their peers back in the classrooms.
