EXPLORERS

Last week was Road Safety week and RACT offered to come in for both of our Friday sessions, to share some activities that will help our Explorers understand road safety. They are hoping to return later in the year, to attend our Thursday sessions.
We are so grateful to Rita and Grace, from RACT, who took the time to visit both our Friday sessions and share important road safety information.

RACT recognises that the lessons children learn now can help guide their behaviour as they grow. They started our session reading the story 'Yippee!'. Yippee! is a book, designed to introduce basic road safety concepts to children up to the age of 6. It is about a fun family road trip to visit Nan and Pop who live near the beach. The story includes counting and road safety information in an engaging, age appropriate way.

After the story, we took turns looking at a picture of a road with lots of hazards on it. The Explorers placed mini STOP signs on the hazards they noticed. Rita and Grace told us to remember 5 important road safety rules: 1. Stop, 2. Look (left & right), 3. Listen (for traffic), 4. Think (is it safe?) and 5. Hold a grown-up's hand if it is safe to cross.

We had some road safety play spaces and activities set up, for our Explorers to engage with. We learned the 'Twinkle Twinkle Traffic Light' song, to remind us about checking what colour traffic lights are.
