As part of their Science studies, Year 4 students have been learning about the custodial responsibility Aboriginal people have for Country and how this influences views about sustainability. Palawa knowledge holder Jason Smith came to our Junior campus recently to speak to the students about the work he does as a cultural burning educator and fire practitioner. Jason led staff and students on a short bushwalk to nearby Boronia Beach. Children learnt about some traditional uses of plants, including bush tucker such as salt bush. Students were amazed to see wallabies and a baby penguin hiding in a burrow. Jason explained to students and staff some of the ways we can all care for Country. It was a wonderful day and we all learned so much.
